Physical activity during pregnancy has long been encouraged for its general health benefits. A recent study offers fresh insight for those navigating fertility care, pregnancy and beyond—moderate exercise before and during pregnancy is not associated with negative maternal or neonatal outcomes.

For fertility patients and the employers who support them, this finding reinforces a key message that physical activity is safe during pregnancy, even if the measurable benefits remain a topic of ongoing research.

What the Research Tells Us

In this recent study, researchers observed 250 individuals in their third trimester of pregnancy, all receiving care from a single antenatal clinic. Participants were grouped based on whether they followed physical activity guidelines set by the World Health Organization, which recommend either 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week.

To assess the impact of physical activity, the researchers evaluated a wide range of maternal and neonatal health indicators. These included laboratory markers such as platelet counts, hemoglobin levels and C-reactive protein, as well as changes in body mass index, the type of anesthesia used during delivery and the incidence of perineal trauma. They also tracked key newborn outcomes like birth weight, Apgar scores and umbilical cord blood measurements.

The findings were clear. Across all of these parameters, physical activity showed no statistically significant association—positive or negative.

Importantly, the absence of significant change does not imply that exercise lacks value. Rather, the study confirms that physical activity during pregnancy is safe and poses no harm to maternal or neonatal health. While measurable benefits may not have emerged in this particular cohort, the researchers note that potential advantages, such as improved cardiovascular function or reduced risk of blood clots, warrant further investigation.
