Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a complication that can result from some forms of fertility medications. Early symptoms include abdominal bloating and discomfort. More significant symptoms include shortness of breath and severe symptoms can involve fluid imbalance and blood clotting problems. Although most cases are mild, and can be treated with just limited activity and drinking fluids with electrolytes, about 1% of patients get moderate to severe symptoms. In rare cases, hospitalization for bed rest and fluid management is necessary. Your doctor will monitor your ovaries during your treatment to assist with prevention of this syndrome.
