Probability Scenarios:

The probability of success with ivf treatments depends upon a number of factors like the age of the woman, the cause of infertility, the quality of egg retrieved and the quality of the semen.

The national averages (2005) show the following probabilities:

Female age

Live birth rate per retrieval

< 35

40.5%

35-37

33.3%

38-40

23.1%

> 40

13.1%

The probability of success also hugely depends upon the type of treatment. You will see in the table below that after a certain age, the probability of success of having a baby is greatly increased with a donor egg.

Treatment type

Live birth per transfer

Fresh transfer

52%

Don’t thaw transfer

48%
